Probe alleged military killing of Gbewaa College lecturer — Kusaug Youth

By: The Observer Times

The Kusaug Youth Movement has called for an independent investigation into the alleged killing of a Gbewaa College of Education lecturer by military personnel in Bawku.

The group alleges that Issaka Abdulai was beaten to death by personnel of the Joint Task Force (JTF) deployed to maintain peace in Bawku on Friday, September 11.

In a statement dated September 12, the movement claimed Mr Abdulai was unarmed and was returning home on his motorcycle after work when the alleged assault occurred shortly after the start of curfew hours. The group condemned the incident as unlawful and urged the government to urgently establish an independent probe into the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death.

The Kusaug Youth Movement further alleged that the incident formed part of a wider pattern of excessive use of force against civilians in conflict-affected communities, citing Garu, Bugri, Binduri, Bawku, Ashaiman and Wa.

It called for the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to lead a transparent investigation in collaboration with an independent panel of the Military High Command.

The movement also demanded that security personnel found to have been involved in the alleged killing be identified, interdicted and prosecuted for murder under the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
