Two people have died and 14 others, including a police officer, sustained injuries following disturbances after a Yam festival at Nchiraa in the Bono Region.
The violence occurred at Four Junction in the Wenchi Municipality at about 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2026, after the festival programme had ended, according to police.
The Bono Regional Police Command said preliminary investigations indicate that Nana Tabiri Yaw II and his sub-chiefs were being escorted to his palace when a gunshot was heard, triggering the disturbances.
Police said 13 people, including a police officer, suffered gunshot wounds and are currently receiving medical treatment.
The bodies of the two deceased persons have been deposited at the Wenchi Methodist Hospital mortuary pending preservation and autopsy.
The Wenchi Divisional Police said calm has since been restored in Nchiraa, with intensified patrols deployed to maintain security in the area.
The Bono Regional Police Command assured residents that it is pursuing those responsible, stating that “every effort is being made to arrest any individual involved in the disturbances.”
The police statement was issued on October 5, 2026, and signed by Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, Public Relations Officer of the Bono Regional Police Command.
