NDC Chairmanship: Opong-Fosu prioritises grassroots, unity and institutional strength

By: Emmanuel Bekoe

Former Local Government Minister Akwasi Opong-Fosu has positioned grassroots engagement, party unity and institutional strength at the centre of his bid for the NDC National Chairmanship.

Mr Opong-Fosu, who formally declared his intention to contest the position on September 17, 2026, said his vision is to help build a stronger and more enduring National Democratic Congress (NDC).

His proposed agenda, which he describes as “Restoration, Renewal and Resetting,” seeks to reconnect the party’s leadership with its grassroots while strengthening structures ahead of the 2028 general election and beyond.

According to him, the NDC must strengthen its internal institutions and move away from an overreliance on individual personalities to ensure the party’s long-term sustainability.

“We must therefore move increasingly from politics organised around personalities and fashions to politics sustained by strong institutions,” he said.

Mr Opong-Fosu said his decision to seek the chairmanship followed extensive consultations with party members, regional caucuses, elders and other stakeholders.

He stressed that his interest in the position was driven by a desire to serve the party rather than personal ambition, saying his approach is rooted in “conviction, not convenience; service, not personal ambition.”

He also pledged to help consolidate the gains of the NDC, protect the legacy of President John Dramani Mahama and strengthen the relationship between the party’s leadership and its grassroots.

For Mr Opong-Fosu, a united and inclusive NDC is essential to sustaining the party beyond individual leaders and preparing the next generation of members for leadership.

“It is about conviction, service and sacrifice,” he said, reaffirming his readiness to contribute to the party’s next phase.
