Ibrahim Mahama vows legal action against Black Maria unit

Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama has announced plans to take legal action against members of Black Maria, a Special Operations Team, following his alleged assault in Tamale.

Speaking at a press conference in Tamale on Monday, March 23, 2026, Mr Mahama said the legal action is not just for his benefit but for the wider public.

“Certainly we are considering legal action. It’s very important. It’s a no-brainer, we have to do it,” he stated.

“It’s not for me, it’s for everyone else. If this could happen to me as well known as I am, then what about the people on the street? Who’s going to speak for them? So we have to do it for the benefit of the collective society we are in,” he added.

Mr Mahama raised concerns about the unit’s conduct, saying there appears to be a pattern of abuse.

“Of course we have heard many stories about the same unit and the brutalities; that’s why they could say that they could kill you and nothing will happen,” he disclosed.

He urged that the “Black Maria” team be disbanded, warning that keeping them in Tamale risks them inflicting similar harm elsewhere.

Mr Mahama cautioned that such incidents could discourage young people from contributing to national development.

“If at the end of the day, through these brutalities, a lot of us young people will not feel like we need to stay in a place like this, then it’s rather on the bad side of justice,” he added.
