Health Ministry summons KATH management over decision to halt A&E admissions

The Ministry of Health has summoned Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) management after a public statement and a television interview confirmed the hospital’s decision to stop admitting new emergency cases at its Accident and Emergency Centre.

In a statement signed by the Chief Director of the Ministry, Desmond Boateng, on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, the Ministry said it had noted a statement circulating on social media titled “KATH Accident and Emergency Centre full and unable to admit new cases, Management,” and that the Head of Public Affairs at KATH had reaffirmed the decision on Channel One TV.

The ministry said this action contradicts a clear directive from His Excellency, the President, forbidding hospitals from turning away emergency cases.

The Ministry, requests that KATH appear before the Minister of Health by 12:00 noon on Thursday, June 4, 2026, to explain why disciplinary action should not be taken for contradicting the President’s directive.

A copy of the summons was sent to the Minister and Deputy Minister of Health.

The Ministry said it has taken note of the public communications and expects full cooperation from KATH as it investigates the matter.

He added that the hospital must show cause why it should not face sanctions for the public position that appeared to limit access to emergency services.
