President John Dramani Mahama has firmly declared that the Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam is fully operational, following the recent fire outbreak at the facility.
Speaking at the 2026 May Day celebration held at Jackson Park in Koforidua, he stated that all six turbines have been restored, a development expected to improve the national grid and ease the power challenges triggered by the incident.
“I know many of you are concerned about the disruptions to the electricity supply caused by the Akosombo fire, but I want to share the good news that the GRIDCO and VRA engineers working together have been able to bypass the burnt-out control room and have restarted all six turbines at the Akosombo generating station.
"And so as of last night, the Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam is fully operational,” the President noted.
He also singled out the efforts of engineers at the Volta River Authority and the Ghana Grid Company Limited for commendation, praising their dedication and hard work in restoring the facility to full capacity.
“These engineers and technicians are a living testament to the fact that Ghanaian workers are the nation’s most valuable asset," he said.
