Berekum Chelsea winger Dominic Frimpong dies in armed robbery attack on team bus

Dominic Frimpong, a 20-year-old winger for Ghana Premier League side Berekum Chelsea, has died following an armed robbery attack on the team bus as they returned from an away fixture on Sunday, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed.

The incident occurred on the Goaso–Bibiani road while the team was travelling back from a league match against Samartex in Samreboi, in the southern part of the country.

In a statement issued on Monday, Berekum Chelsea recounted the attack, saying their team bus was ambushed by armed robbers who blocked the road to stop their passage.

The club further explained that masked men armed with guns and assault rifles opened fire as the driver attempted to reverse, forcing players and staff to flee into nearby bushes for safety.

The Ghana Football Association later expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing Frimpong’s death as a devastating loss to both the club and Ghana football. It said the young winger was a promising talent whose commitment reflected the spirit of the domestic league.

The GFA has also indicated plans to review and strengthen security arrangements for teams travelling for league fixtures, following the tragic incident.
