Ofori Atta heads to US court today over immigration and extradition Issues

Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta is scheduled to appear before a United States court today, Tuesday, January 20, 2026, over alleged immigration violations that could open the door for his extradition to Ghana.

United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say Mr Ofori Atta overstayed his visitor visa and has since lost his legal immigration status in the country. A court determination on a possible extradition to Ghana is expected to follow the proceedings.

However, Ghana’s Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has dismissed claims that the matter is a routine visa overstay, insisting that Mr Ofori Atta’s visa was deliberately revoked by US authorities.

Speaking on Newsfile on Saturday, January 10, Dr Ayine disclosed that US officials had initially granted Mr Ofori Atta permission to remain in the country until November 29, 2025, but he failed to depart as required.

He stressed that the revocation of the visa was intentional and tied to ongoing investigations, not a standard immigration issue.

“This is not exactly about immigration. His visa has not expired. It expires in February. It was revoked. I am telling you this on authority,” Dr Ayine stated.

According to the Attorney General, Ghana’s request for extradition is linked to investigations being carried out by the Office of the Special Prosecutor in relation to the Strategic Mobilisation Limited matter.

“I have been working closely with the Americans on this case. The visa was revoked, and that is why he lost his immigration status in the United States,” Dr Ayine added.

Meanwhile, former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre, Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, is also expected to appear before a US court on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, for proceedings to determine her possible extradition to Ghana.
