Freddie Blay remanded, moved to hospital as legal battle over Kitase land intensifies

Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Freddie Blay, has been remanded into custody by the Akropong Circuit Court over his alleged involvement in a disputed property demolition at Kitase in the Eastern Region.

However, in a dramatic turn of events, Mr. Blay was transferred from custody to a medical facility for urgent attention shortly after the court proceedings, raising concerns about his health as the case unfolds.

The court has adjourned the matter to April 9, 2026, when he is expected to reappear.

Mr. Blay, a seasoned legal practitioner, was handed over to the Akropong Police on Monday, March 16, 2026, after authorities in Accra executed a criminal arrest warrant that had reportedly been outstanding for nearly a year.

According to the prosecution, the case originates from a complaint by a landowner who accused Mr. Blay of ordering the demolition of a building under construction on a disputed parcel of land at Kitase.

Court records indicate that after the initial report, Mr. Blay allegedly failed to honour police invitations to assist investigations. Charges were subsequently filed in early 2025, but he did not appear in court in April 2025, leading to the issuance of a warrant for his arrest.

Sources close to Mr. Blay have strongly disputed claims that he evaded justice, insisting he was unaware of the arrest warrant until his recent detention.

They argue that the matter is purely civil, tied to a long-standing land dispute dating back to 1994, and currently under appeal following a High Court ruling in Koforidua.

On the demolition allegation, the defence maintains that Mr. Blay did not authorise the destruction of any structure, but rather ordered the clearing of a vacant plot in January 2026 for environmental and public health reasons.
