Carrick Takes Charge as Holland Joins Man United Coaching Team

Michael Carrick has agreed to become Manchester United’s interim head coach, with former England assistant manager Steve Holland set to serve as his deputy.

Carrick reached an agreement with the club on Monday night, with an official announcement expected on Tuesday once all paperwork is completed. He replaces Ruben Amorim, who was sacked on January 5 after 14 months in charge, following two caretaker matches overseen by Darren Fletcher.

The 44-year-old will be in the dugout for Saturday’s Premier League derby against Manchester City at Old Trafford.

Holland, 55, brings vast experience, having worked under Gareth Southgate during England’s run to fourth place at the 2018 World Cup and runner-up finishes at Euro 2021 and Euro 2024. He previously enjoyed success at Chelsea under several managers but was dismissed in April after a brief four-month spell with Japan’s Yokohama F Marinos.

Carrick’s backroom team will also include Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans and Travis Binnion. Woodgate previously worked with Carrick at Middlesbrough, while former United defender Evans returns to Old Trafford. Binnion is already part of United’s coaching setup.

Carrick, who had a three-match stint as United’s caretaker boss following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal in 2021, impressed club executives Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox during face-to-face talks last week with his tactical vision and hands-on coaching approach.

He is expected to shift United to a 4-2-3-1 formation, moving away from the back-three system used by Amorim.

Former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also held discussions with the club but Carrick was preferred, with United citing his closer involvement on the training ground as a key factor.

Darren Fletcher, who oversaw matches against Burnley and Brighton, will return to his role with the Under-18s, a move described as mutually agreed and in line with the club’s long-term development plans.
