“Fake NPP” outburst triggers expulsion move against Frimpong Boateng

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has initiated processes to expel former Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, following comments he made on Channel One TV in which he described the party as “fake” and publicly distanced himself from its current leadership.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng made the remarks during an interview on The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Monday, January 12, 2026, where he criticised the state of the party, arguing that it no longer reflects the ideals and values of the NPP he once knew.

“The present NPP is not NPP. It is fake. From what I see now, this is not the NPP I used to know,” he said.

Asked whether he still considered himself a member of the party, the former minister responded that he no longer associates with what he termed the current version of the NPP, insisting that the “real” party exists only in the background. He further warned that maintaining Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer would be a “trainwreck” for the NPP.

In a swift response, the NPP, in a statement issued on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, and signed by its General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, said it had taken serious exception to Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s comments. The party noted that beyond questioning its credibility, the former minister also alleged that the 2023 presidential primary was rigged in favour of Dr. Bawumia, the party’s presidential candidate for the 2024 general elections.

The NPP strongly rejected the allegation, describing it as baseless and unsubstantiated, and maintained that the primary was conducted in a free, fair, transparent and credible manner, with outcomes accepted by all participating candidates and party members.

According to the statement, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s remarks were deemed highly reprehensible and injurious to the unity, values and integrity of the party.

As a result, the NPP said it has invoked the relevant provisions of its constitution to commence formal processes to expel him, assuring that all actions will be carried out strictly in line with due process.
