NIA extends Ghana Card registration for children to North East, Upper East

By: Emmanuel Bekoe

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has begun registering children aged 6 to 14 for Ghana Cards in the North East and Upper East regions.

The exercise, conducted in collaboration with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), is part of the NIA’s phased rollout of child registration, according to a release dated September 28, 2026, signed by Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, Head of the NIA's Corporate Affairs Directorate.

Registration teams will move from school to school, covering both public and private institutions, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Children who do not attend school may register at designated schools or other approved registration points in their communities.

Parents or guardians must present the child’s original birth certificate, valid Ghanaian passport or Certificate of Acquired Citizenship. Where none of these documents is available, a parent, relative or legal guardian may complete an Oath of Identity form.

Two Social Welfare Officers may also vouch for children who have no known relatives. Parents and guardians are encouraged to provide the child’s NHIS card or NHIS number, where available.

Any person presenting a child for registration must be a Ghanaian citizen, at least 18 years old, of sound mind and in possession of a valid Ghana Card.

The NIA has specifically advised children who registered during the 2024 pilot exercise but have not yet received their cards not to register again. They should instead visit the NIA District Office where they originally registered for issuance of their cards.

The child registration programme began in the Volta and Oti regions in May 2026 before being extended to the Northern Region. Its expansion to the North East and Upper East regions marks the latest phase of the nationwide rollout.

The NIA is urging parents, guardians, schools and other stakeholders to support the exercise and ensure all eligible children have the opportunity to register and obtain the Ghana Card. The Authority also cautioned that providing false information or facilitating the registration of a non-Ghanaian is an offence punishable by law.
