Kaneshie traffic alert: motorists urged to use alternative routes

The GARID Project has urged motorists without business in Kaneshie to avoid the area as a temporary Pamprom Junction closure is expected to worsen congestion.

The westbound carriageway of the Dr Busia Highway at Pamprom Junction was closed to traffic on Monday, September 7, 2026, to allow construction works under the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project.

GARID Project Coordinator, Dr Ohene Sarfo, said the closure would place additional pressure on Kaneshie, an area already experiencing heavy traffic.

He advised motorists whose destinations are elsewhere to consider alternative routes rather than add to congestion around the affected corridor.

“What we advise is that if you don’t have any business in Kaneshie as a destination, as much as possible, avoid it, because the traffic will build up, and it will really be inconvenient,” Dr Sarfo told Accra-based Citi FM.

One alternative is the Kwame Nkrumah Avenue route through Abossey Okai or Kaneshie North, connecting motorists to the N1 without passing through the affected area.

Motorists can also use the Atta Mills Highway through Korle Bu and Dansoman before exiting around Mallam and Sakaman.

Dr Sarfo said greater use of the alternative routes would reduce the number of vehicles heading towards Kaneshie and ease pressure around Pamprom Junction, which he described as a current “hotspot.”

“You could even use the Atta Mills Highway and onwards through Korle Bu, Dansoman, and exit at Mallam, Sakaman, thereabouts, so that the volumes would reduce coming to this point, because this is a hotspot now,” he said.

He appealed to motorists who must use the affected route to cooperate with traffic management measures and follow designated diversions to help minimise delays and facilitate the speedy completion of the works.

“For those who need to come through here, we would ask for your cooperation so that we can get this activity ongoing quickly, finish quickly, and then we can open it up to traffic,” he added.

The temporary closure is part of GARID’s ongoing interventions to improve flood resilience and drainage infrastructure in the Greater Accra Region. Motorists using the Kaneshie-Pamprom corridor have been advised to plan ahead, allow additional travel time and use alternative routes where possible.
