Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has announced a three-day shutdown of the Kpong Water Treatment Plant from Thursday, 6 August to Saturday, 8 August 2026, to undertake emergency maintenance on key transmission pipelines between Kpong and Tema.

The company said the exercise will involve the isolation and replacement of weak sections on the 21-inch and 42-inch transmission pipelines following engineering assessments that identified more than 300 metres of deteriorated pipeline sections requiring urgent intervention.

According to GWL, the maintenance works are aimed at preventing major pipeline failures, reducing water losses and improving the reliability of water supply along the Kpong-Tema transmission network.

To enable the repairs, five sections of the transmission pipelines will be temporarily isolated. Customers connected to the Kpong Water Supply System are expected to experience interruptions in supply and reduced water pressure during the three-day period.

Affected areas include communities across the eastern part of Accra, including Gbetsele, Ashaiman, Katamanso, Zenu, Atadeka, Afienya, Appolonia, Prampram, Kpone, Dawhenya, Tema Metropolis, Spintex, Baatsona, Sakumono, Nungua, Teshie and surrounding communities.

Other affected locations include Kpong, Akuse, Somanya, Atimpoku and nearby towns supplied by the system.

In a statement signed by Chief Manager of Public Relations and Communications, Stanley Martey, GWL said its engineering teams will work continuously throughout the maintenance period to complete the replacement works and restore normal water supply as quickly as possible.

The company has advised customers in affected communities to store enough water before the shutdown and use available supplies responsibly. Critical institutions, including hospitals and essential service providers, have also been encouraged to make contingency arrangements, with water tankers expected to support selected facilities where necessary.

GWL said the intervention is a major investment to protect one of Ghana's strategic water transmission systems, adding that the replacement of deteriorated sections will reduce pipeline bursts and improve long-term supply reliability in Tema and the eastern corridor of the Greater Accra Region.
