Two people have been confirmed dead and six others injured after a devastating collision involving four vehicles triggered a fire at Birim River on the Kumasi Highway on Monday, 3 August.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said firefighters received a distress call at 11:00 a.m. and arrived at the scene just three minutes later, at 11:03 a.m., to battle the blaze and rescue victims.
According to the GNFS, the crash involved a fuel tanker, a Mitsubishi pick-up (GE 8602-17), a Kia Sorento (GT 8601-14) and an STC bus (GS 7050-22). The fuel tanker, Mitsubishi pick-up and STC bus were burnt beyond recognition, while the Kia Sorento sustained extensive damage.
Firefighters successfully extinguished the tanker fire and began clearing debris from the highway to restore the safe movement of traffic after bringing the situation under control.
The six injured victims, four men and two women, were transported to Hawa Memorial Hospital for medical treatment. The two fatalities, both male occupants of the fuel tanker, were burnt beyond recognition, and their bodies have been handed over to the police.
The GNFS said the cause of the collision and the subsequent fire remains under investigation. Authorities are expected to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal crash.
