The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will donate US$250,000, equivalent to about GH₵3 million, to support communities affected by Ghana’s recent devastating floods.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the intervention in a Facebook post, stating that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had officially received notification from ECOWAS regarding the planned assistance.
According to the Minister, the funds are intended to provide relief to individuals and households impacted by the floods, which caused widespread destruction across parts of the country.
Mr Ablakwa assured the public that the ministry would ensure transparency and accountability in the handling of the funds, adding that the full amount would be transferred to the appropriate authorities immediately after it is received in the ministry’s accounts.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on behalf of the Government of Ghana, expressed appreciation to ECOWAS for what it described as an act of solidarity and African compassion during a difficult period.
The floods, which occurred on 29 June, affected several communities across seven regions of Ghana, displacing thousands of residents and causing significant damage to homes, businesses and critical infrastructure.
