Naser Toure Mahama laid to rest today as Ayawaso East mourns

Naser Toure Mahama, the late Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, is being laid to rest today, Monday, January 5, as residents, political figures, and family members gather to bid farewell to a man widely regarded as one of the constituency’s most influential grassroots leaders.

The veteran legislator passed away on Sunday, January 4, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital after a period of illness. News of his death spread rapidly across Accra, particularly within the Nima Mamobi enclave, where he was deeply rooted and widely respected.

In keeping with Islamic tradition, burial rites for Naser Toure Mahama are being conducted less than 24 hours after his passing. The swift arrangements have drawn thousands of mourners to Nima and Kanda, creating a sombre but dignified atmosphere across the constituency.

The logistics for the funeral were fast tracked through high level coordination. Speaking on the arrangements, the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso North, Yussif Jajah, disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama personally intervened to ensure that administrative processes at the mortuary were cleared without delay.

“As we speak now, we have brought the body home,” Mr. Jajah confirmed late Sunday evening, noting that the timely intervention allowed the family to proceed with burial rites in accordance with Islamic requirements.

The day’s funeral programme is centred on the Ayawaso East Constituency Office along the Kanda Highway. A Janazah prayer is scheduled for exactly 10:00 a.m. and will be led by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, an honour that reflects the late MP’s standing within the Muslim community and Ghanaian society at large.

Immediately after the prayers, a funeral procession will move to the Madina Cemetery, where Naser Toure Mahama will be laid to rest.

Beyond today’s solemn ceremonies, tributes continue to pour in for the late legislator, who was widely described as a grassroots general. Throughout his time in Parliament, he maintained close ties with his constituents and was known for his accessibility, humility, and unwavering commitment to community development.

His parliamentary tenure was marked by strong advocacy for urban renewal in Nima, where he championed sanitation, housing improvement, and infrastructure development. He was also a vocal supporter of youth empowerment initiatives within Zongo communities, often engaging young people directly and encouraging political participation.

Residents of Ayawaso East have described Naser Toure Mahama as a bridge builder who successfully connected the concerns of inner city communities to the national legislature. Despite his political stature, many say he remained grounded, approachable, and deeply connected to everyday life in the constituency.

Meanwhile, the Greater Accra Regional Police Command is expected to deploy officers to manage traffic along the Kanda Highway and surrounding roads due to the anticipated large turnout. Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes until mid afternoon.

The passing of Naser Toure Mahama leaves a significant void in Parliament, particularly within the Minority caucus, where he was regarded as a vital link between lawmakers and densely populated urban communities.
