A tipper truck has collided with a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus carrying lower primary school pupils, leaving 11 children injured in an accident near Dzorwulu in Accra.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed the incident in a video shared on its Facebook page, indicating that the crash involved a tipper truck and a school bus transporting children who were returning from an excursion.

According to eyewitness accounts, one of the injured children is receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Police Hospital, while the remaining 10 children are being treated at the 37 Military Hospital.

Assistant Divisional Officer Grade I (ADO I) Alex King Nartey of the GNFS said preliminary information suggested that the tipper truck crashed into the rear of the Sprinter bus, although the exact cause of the accident had not yet been established.

“This is the Fiesta Royale to Accra Mall stretch, where a tipper truck has run into a minibus containing children,” ADO I Nartey said.

He added that personnel from the GNFS National Headquarters Rescue Team had been deployed to the scene to assess the situation and assist in separating the two vehicles involved.

“It looks like it is a Sprinter bus that was containing school children. It is believed that they had gone for an excursion, and this is the level of the impact,” he said.

Footage from the crash scene showed the extent of the collision, with visible damage to both vehicles, blood stains inside the bus and a child’s school bag left behind. Authorities are yet to confirm additional details on the full number of casualties, the conditions of the injured children or whether any fatalities have been recorded.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing as emergency responders continue their assessment of the scene.
