Former Ghana coach Otto Addo has revealed that he never received a clear explanation for his dismissal as head coach of the Black Stars, saying the decision remains difficult for him to understand.

Addo, who led Ghana during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, said his two-year spell in charge was marked by intense pressure and disagreements involving the Ghana Football Association (GFA) leadership.

“Honestly, I still haven’t been given a reason to this day and honestly, I didn’t ask either,” Addo told German publication 11Fußball.

“I was in Ghana for two years as coach. There was, of course, a lot of back-and-forth between me, our federation president, and the board as well. It just felt like I could have been sacked after just one month,” he added.

Reflecting on his exit shortly after Ghana’s 1–2 defeat to Germany, Addo said he remained unaware of the specific reasons behind the decision to end his tenure.

“I still, to this day, haven’t understood the reason. The expectations from our federation president were simply too high,” he said in comments reported by Fußball.

Addo’s first stint as Black Stars coach began in 2022 after he was appointed to lead Ghana ahead of the World Cup in Qatar. Under his guidance, Ghana returned to football’s biggest stage after missing the 2018 tournament.

At the tournament, the Black Stars exited at the group stage after finishing bottom of Group H, following defeats to Portugal and Uruguay and a victory over South Korea.

Following his departure, Addo later returned to the Black Stars coaching role in 2024, with the mandate of guiding Ghana through the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign.
