A Brussels Airlines flight bound for Lomé returned safely to Accra minutes after take-off following a technical fault, prompting the cancellation of the service.

According to the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Flight SN278 departed Accra at 6:06 p.m. but the flight crew decided to return as a precautionary safety measure. The aircraft landed safely at 6:18 p.m., with no reported injuries.

In a statement issued on Monday, July 20, 2026, the GCAA commended the flight crew for adhering to established safety protocols, stressing that the safety of passengers and crew remains its highest priority.

The Authority said the technical issue that prompted the aircraft's return is being investigated by Brussels Airlines in line with established aviation safety procedures under the oversight of the GCAA.

Following the incident, Brussels Airlines cancelled Flight SN278. The GCAA said affected passengers are receiving the necessary assistance from the airline in accordance with the Ghana Civil Aviation (Economic) Directives, 2019 (Part 2 – Consumer Protection).

The Authority also sought to reassure the travelling public that Ghana's aviation safety and security oversight system remains strong despite the incident.

The GCAA said it would continue to monitor the investigation to ensure all applicable safety standards and regulatory requirements are met.
