The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has warned residents of Kumasi and parts of the Ashanti Region to expect intermittent power outages over the next three months while the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) undertakes a major rehabilitation of ageing transmission infrastructure.

Mr Jinapor said the project involves replacing transmission lines and towers that are more than 30 years old and can no longer cope with Kumasi’s growing electricity demand.

Speaking after inspecting ongoing works at the Anwomaso Bulk Supply Point, he said the rehabilitation will increase transmission capacity from 364 megawatts to about 1,000 megawatts, ensuring a more stable and reliable supply on completion.

He appealed to residents and businesses to be patient, describing the rehabilitation as a long‑overdue investment that is critical to securing Kumasi’s electricity supply for the future.

He warned that delaying the replacement of the ageing infrastructure could expose the city to more frequent power supply challenges.

"The electricity, lines that help supplies where you are, the current lines here are very old and is more than 30 years so it cannot evacute power so we're coming to change this and replace a new lines which strong to supply power to the people of Kumasi.

"This will take like 3 months so because we're to remove and replace new lines at a point there may be power cut so that the workers can work so that we can preserve what is called safety.

"So I will plead with the people of Kumasi to exercise patient and this exercise is something that would have done longtime and when we came to power saw that if we don't work on it, a day is coming you'll get power at all," he explained.

Chief Executive Officer of GRIDCo, Ing. Frank Otchere, said the existing transmission towers have reached the end of their operational lifespan after more than 30 years in service.

He added that replacing the infrastructure is essential to improving the efficiency and reliability of electricity transmission across Kumasi and neighbouring communities.

Mr Otchere said GRIDCo will regularly publish schedules of planned power interruptions throughout the three‑month rehabilitation period to enable residents and businesses to make necessary preparations.

The company has assured consumers that the temporary inconvenience will result in a more resilient electricity network capable of meeting Kumasi’s growing energy demand.
