The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, has described Dr. Bawumia’s victory in the New Patriotic Party’s presidential primary as a clear affirmation of Ghana’s democratic character, insisting that the country remains firmly rooted in democratic principles rather than theocratic rule.
Reacting to the outcome of the contest, the Chief Imam said Dr. Bawumia’s win demonstrates that political leadership in Ghana is determined by competence, vision, and the will of the people, not religious identity, and urged Ghanaians to continue upholding tolerance, unity, and peaceful coexistence as the nation moves toward the 2028 general elections.
In a statement issued on Monday, February 2, the Chief Imam also praised the other contestants for conceding in a spirit of unity and reconciliation, noting that their conduct reflected political maturity and respect for democratic norms.
He stressed that while approaches to internal party contests may differ, the shared objective of national progress must remain paramount.
“Democracy is a shared responsibility and a civic duty. And when we all play our roles effectively in pursuit of democratic prosperity, in the end, we will not remember the discomfort of our individual struggles, but the comfort of our collective success”, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu said.
