Afenyo-Markin warns NPP against internal divisions ahead of 2028 elections

Minority Leader and Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has warned that internal divisions pose the most serious threat to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) electoral success, describing disunity as a persistent “slow poison” that has historically undermined the party.

Afenyo-Markin stated that the NPP’s electoral record clearly demonstrates that whenever the party becomes fragmented, defeat is almost inevitable, regardless of the quality of its leadership or policy proposals.

He urged party members to set aside their differences and work together to regain power in the 2028 general elections.

He made this call while addressing a gathering of key NPP stakeholders in the Effutu Constituency shortly after the party’s flagbearer contest.

He stressed the need for party faithful to rally solidly behind former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, emphasising the importance of a unified vision, coordinated communication, and a shared sense of purpose that extends from the national leadership to the grassroots.

Afenyo-Markin cautioned against a repeat of the 2024 elections, which, he noted, were severely affected by “skirt and blouse” voting, a trend that weakened the party’s overall performance.

He pointed out that the consequences of internal discord are well documented in the party’s history.

Drawing on past experiences, Afenyo-Markin recalled that divisions within the Danquah-Busia political tradition in 1979 led to the emergence of the UNC and PFP, paving the way for the PNP under Hilla Limann to win the elections.

He noted that similar internal challenges also contributed to the NPP’s losses in 1992, 1996, 2008, and 2012.

Conversely, he highlighted that the party’s victories in 2000, 2004, 2016, and 2020 came at times when unity, discipline, and collective responsibility prevailed.

According to the Effutu MP, the formula for electoral success is already clear: unity strengthens the party, while disunity steadily weakens its chances.

He concluded by calling on NPP members across the country to fully commit to supporting the party’s flagbearer, warning that a failure to do so would equate to failing the party itself.

Hon. Afenyo-Markin urged members not to allow a repeat of the 2024 outcome and to work decisively to secure victory in 2028.
