The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has commended the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Ghana Police Service for the peaceful conduct of the NPP’s presidential primary, which saw former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emerge as the party’s flagbearer for the December 2028 presidential election.
In a statement issued in Accra on Sunday, February 1, 2026, and signed by NDC National Chairman Mr. Johnson Asiedu-Nketiah, the party described the primary as a “violence-free electoral process” and praised the Ghana Police Service for its “remarkable and efficient” security arrangements that ensured smooth operations across the country.
The NDC also welcomed the participation and collaboration of the NPP and other political parties in efforts to strengthen Ghana’s democratic culture. It further acknowledged the reconciliatory statements made by unsuccessful candidates, expressing hope that the tone of unity reflected in those remarks would be sustained.
“We have also taken note of the reconciliatory concession statements from the other unsuccessful candidates, and hope that they will walk their talk,” the statement added.
Dr. Bawumia secured a decisive victory in the NPP presidential primary, obtaining 56.48 per cent of the total votes cast and clinching the party’s flagbearer position for the 2028 general elections.
His closest rival, former Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong, placed second with 46,554 votes (23.76 per cent), while Dr. Bryan Acheampong came third with 36,303 votes (18.53 per cent). Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum finished fourth with 1,999 votes (1.02 per cent), and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong came fifth with 402 votes (0.21 per cent).
