Wontumi, former NSS bosses return to court as major ORAL cases resume

A series of high-profile prosecutions under the government's Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative are set to continue this week, with several politically exposed persons and former public officials appearing before courts across Accra.

Among those expected in court are Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, former National Service Scheme (NSS) Executive Director Osei Assibey Antwi, and former NSS Deputy Executive Director Gifty Oware Mensah.

Chairman Wontumi faces the busiest schedule, with three separate court appearances linked to ongoing ORAL prosecutions.

The first hearing is scheduled for Monday, June 15, before Criminal Court 4 in the Samreboi Illegal Mining Case. The court is expected to consider matters relating to legal representation following recent developments involving his defence team.

The same case returns on Wednesday, June 17, when parties are expected to address the court ahead of the next stage of proceedings.

Wontumi is also due before General Jurisdiction Court 10 on Thursday, June 18, in the Exim Bank Loan Case, where he is standing trial alongside two other accused persons.

In a separate matter, former NSS Executive Director Osei Assibey Antwi will appear before the High Court on Monday for a Case Management Conference in the ongoing National Service case.

Former NSS Deputy Executive Director Gifty Oware Mensah is scheduled to appear before Criminal Court 4 on Tuesday, June 16, for the continuation of the cross-examination of the first prosecution witness in a related case.

Several other ORAL-linked prosecutions are also on the court calendar this week.

The Specialised Court is expected to hear the Buffer Stock Case involving Hanan Abdul-Wahab Aludiba and another accused person for the completion of a Case Management Conference.

Another closely watched case involves Kwabena Adu Boahene and two others over the alleged cybersecurity software scandal. Proceedings are expected to continue with the completion of the cross-examination of the third prosecution witness before Specialized Court 1.

Meanwhile, Criminal Court 1 will resume hearing the case involving Akonta Mining and three others over alleged illegal mining activities in the Tano-Nimiri Forest Reserve. The matter is scheduled for the continuation of the cross-examination of the third prosecution witness.

The hearings form part of the government's broader ORAL initiative, which seeks to recover alleged misappropriated state resources and prosecute corruption-related offences.
