Deputy Electoral Commission Chair Dr. Bossman Asare has resigned effective July 31, while Operations Deputy Chair Samuel Tettey has retired.
The Electoral Commission (EC) is set for a major leadership transition following the resignation of its Deputy Chairperson in charge of Corporate Affairs, Dr. Bossman Asare, and the retirement of Deputy Chairperson in charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey.
The development was announced by Government Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, June 15, 2026.
According to Mr. Kwakye Ofosu, Dr. Asare's resignation takes effect on July 31, 2026. He disclosed that the outgoing deputy chairperson indicated in his resignation letter that he intends to return to academia and continue his professional work at the University of Ghana.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said Dr. Asare also expressed gratitude to the President and the people of Ghana for the opportunity to serve at the Electoral Commission.
He further confirmed that Mr. Samuel Tettey, who serves as Deputy Chairperson in charge of Operations, has retired from office.
Government has already initiated steps to fill the vacancies. Mr. Kwakye Ofosu revealed that a nominee has been submitted to the Council of State for consideration as part of the constitutional appointment process.
He explained that an official announcement on Mr. Tettey's successor will be made after the Council of State completes its review, while a separate process will subsequently be undertaken to replace Dr. Asare.
The twin departures mark a significant change in the leadership of the Electoral Commission, one of Ghana's key democratic institutions responsible for organising and supervising public elections and referenda.
The Electoral Commission is expected to provide further details on the transition and succession arrangements in the coming weeks.
