Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh has said Ghanaians are looking to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for what he describes as a credible policy alternative to address ongoing challenges in Ghana’s cocoa sector.
His remarks come amid growing debate over recent adjustments to the cocoa producer price, which has drawn concern from farmers and stakeholders across the value chain.
On February 12, government announced a reduction in the cocoa producer price to GH¢41,392 per tonne, equivalent to GH¢2,587 per bag, for the remainder of the 2025/2026 crop season, a move that has triggered widespread discussion within the agricultural sector, particularly among cocoa farmers.
In response, the Minority Caucus constituted a Select Committee to tour cocoa-growing communities across the country and engage farmers directly on their concerns and experiences.
The committee, led by Mr. Annoh-Dompreh, gathered feedback from farmers and compiled recommendations aimed at improving conditions within the cocoa industry and ensuring long-term sustainability.
Presenting the committee’s report to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Mr. Annoh-Dompreh said expectations from cocoa farmers and the wider public are firmly directed at the NPP flagbearer for solutions.
“The Ghanaian people are waiting to hear from their saviour. They know you will be able to say something that will be assuring, and not just assuring, also an honest statement for them to know that you will not just come and make a promise that cannot be fulfilled,” he said.
He added that Ghanaians expect clear and credible policy direction that can restore confidence in the cocoa sector and address the concerns of farmers.
The Minority Caucus says the findings from its nationwide tour are expected to feed into broader policy discussions on stabilising the cocoa industry and improving livelihoods within cocoa-growing communities.
