GACL launches crackdown on extortion at national airports

By: Nana Ofori

Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has unveiled a package of strict measures to eradicate extortion and other misconduct at airports under its management.

The new measures were agreed at a high‑level stakeholder meeting held on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, which brought together principal agencies operating at GACL‑managed airports to tackle recurring reports of passengers being extorted.

As part of the strategy, GACL will deploy a “mystery shopping” programme to detect staff involved in extortion.

It warned that, personnel found to have engaged in such behaviour will be publicly named through appropriate media channels as part of a “name and shame” deterrent, while also facing disciplinary measures.

Those confirmed culpable will be permanently prohibited from working at any airport or within airport operational environments.

In a statement cited that, to complement the initiative, GACL has set up a dedicated reporting hotline, 0542175636, available by call, WhatsApp and SMS for passengers to report incidents involving personnel of agencies and service providers at the airports.

The reporting mechanism covers officials from the Ghana Immigration Service, the Ghana Revenue Authority’s Customs Division, the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, the Ghana Police Service, National Security, the Bureau of National Intelligence (BNI), Port Health, the Narcotics Control Commission, airlines, ground‑handling companies, private security firms, concessionaires, car‑park operators and other service providers.

GACL has urged members of the travelling public to include the date and time of any incident, the name of the officer involved, the agency concerned and the location where the event occurred when submitting complaints.

It stated that, passengers were reminded of their right to request the Airport Identification Card of any official claiming to represent an agency at the airport, to verify identity.

Travellers were also advised to insist on official receipts for all payments made on airport premises and to report any suspicious conduct through the dedicated hotline.

GACL management said it is relying on public cooperation to eliminate extortion and other unacceptable practices, stressing that the initiative is part of wider efforts to improve professionalism and to reinforce Ghana’s standing as the preferred aviation hub and leader in airport business in West Africa.
