Flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has gained significant momentum ahead of the January 31 presidential primaries following a strong show of support from the Manhyia South Constituency during his campaign tour.
Addressing party delegates and supporters, Dr. Bawumia dismissed claims of declining electoral appeal revealing that NPP votes in his hometown increased by 25 percent in the 2024 general elections contrary to widespread misinformation. He noted that similar gains were recorded in several constituencies where his performance surpassed that of previous NPP flagbearers.
According to him, an overwhelming endorsement at the primaries would further energise the party and position him to lead the NPP to a decisive victory in the 2028 general elections. He therefore urged delegates to vote massively on January 31 to consolidate the party’s strength.
During the visit, the people of Manhyia South, led by their Member of Parliament, Hon. Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, presented Dr. Bawumia with a Citation of Honour and Appreciation in recognition of his leadership and vision.
Hon. Baffour Awuah praised Dr. Bawumia for his bold and decisive leadership describing him as a candidate with a proven record of competence and delivery. He further expressed gratitude for the selection of Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), a native of Manhyia South, as running mate for the 2024 elections describing the decision as historic and a source of pride for the constituency and the Ashanti Region.
The event was characterised by renewed confidence as party faithful reaffirmed their unwavering support for the DMB–NAPO ticket and pledged to work tirelessly for the success of the New Patriotic Party.
The New Patriotic Party is set to elect its presidential candidate on January 31, as part of efforts to reorganise and reposition the party ahead of the 2028 general elections, following its defeat in the 2024 polls. The primaries have generated intense internal contestation, as the party seeks a unifying figure capable of regaining public confidence and broadening its electoral appeal.
Dr. Bawumia is contesting the flagbearership alongside other high-profile aspirants, including former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong; former Agriculture Minister, Dr. Bryan Acheampong; former Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum; and former General Secretary of the party, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong. All aspirants have embarked on nationwide campaigns, engaging delegates and party structures.
