The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has called on the government to expand its teacher recruitment drive to over 7,000.
Speaking at the Association's National Council meeting, the President of GNAT, Prosper Tachie Esq, argued that the current figure of 100,000 is inadequate to absorb the growing number of qualified trainees seeking employment.
According to him, the situation is “disturbing,” especially given assurances from the Ministry of Finance during the 2025 base pay negotiations to increase public sector employment, including the recruitment of more teachers.
GNAT warned that the growing number of unemployed trained teachers poses a potential threat to national security, urging the government to treat the issue with urgency.
"In view of the threat of unemployment to national security, the National Council of the Ghana National Association of teachers demands an astronomical increase in the number to be recruited
"And also calls on the government to ensure that those who completed their training earlier get the opportunity before those who completed later," he stated.
GNAT added that data from the National Teaching Council shows a significant number of teachers are also leaving the country in search of better opportunities.
These developments, GNAT noted, have increased the workload on teachers currently in the system, further justifying the need for expanded recruitment.
The Association appealed to the government to demonstrate similar commitment to the education sector by raising teacher recruitment numbers.
"We know we have a listening President if you could issue an instruction for the number to be recruited into the Security Service to be increased, we request the same as a union that the workload on our members has increased," GNAT called
