A Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team, Dr Ezekiel Agyekum Obeng, has stated that there has not been a single place in Ghana where a transformer has been replaced since the onset of the current “dumsor”.
In a recent interview, he emphasised that even the Energy Minister, when he was in opposition during NPP tenure, once said that Electricity Company Ghana (ECG) does not carry out maintenance services at night.
Dr Obeng then questioned why there have been instances of “dumsor” at night if transformers cannot be replaced during those hours.
“Where have you seen any transformer being replaced, tell us any single place, any single community which has had a transformer replacement, you won't find it anywhere.
“How will transformer be replaced and light will go off at night when the sector minister today in opposition told us that ECG does not carry out maintenance services at night, yesterday before I slept my light was off, were you replacing transformers,” he questioned.
He added that what most Ghanaians remember about President Mahama’s previous administration is “dumsor”, describing it as having caused Ghanaians post-traumatic stress disorder due to the length of the “dumsor” period under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.
He said that if Ghanaians are calling on the NDC today amid power outages, it is because they still have memories of what happened previously.
Dr Obeng argued that there was no investment in the sector.
He said the NPP had gone “on the tangent” of comparing Ghana’s generating capacity before the NDC took over in 2009, noting that the NDC added just about 1,806MW in eight years, whereas the NPP added over 1,900MW in eight years.
“If you don't do investment how would you get the install capacity added?” he said.
