The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a travel advisory to Ghanaians following a series of deadly terrorist attacks in Mali, raising fresh security concerns across the Sahel region.
According to multiple reports, Mali’s Defence Minister, Sadio Camara, was killed during coordinated attacks launched by jihadist militants and separatist groups across several parts of the country.
State television later confirmed his death, indicating that he succumbed to injuries sustained while confronting the attackers. Reports also suggest that the head of Mali’s military junta, General Assimi Goïta, was moved to a secure location after his residence was targeted.
In the northern part of the country, Russian mercenaries contracted by the Malian military are said to have agreed to withdraw from Kidal following two days of intense clashes, according to the separatist Azawad Liberation Front (FLA).
In a statement issued on Monday, the Government of Ghana expressed deep concern over the coordinated attacks, which occurred on April 25 and targeted multiple military installations, including sites in the capital, Bamako.
The attacks reportedly resulted in several casualties, including senior military officials, as well as injuries to both security personnel and civilians.
Ghana extended its condolences to the government and people of Mali, describing the incident as tragic and wishing those injured a swift recovery.
“Violent extremism must have no place in our world, and we must step up collective efforts to end this horror,” the statement noted.
As part of immediate precautionary measures, the Ministry has advised Ghanaians residing in or travelling to Mali to exercise extreme caution and avoid all non-essential movement.
Citizens have also been urged to maintain regular contact with Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Bamako for updates and consular support.
Additionally, Ghanaian traders and transport operators who ply the Mali route have been directed to suspend travel until further notice, as authorities monitor developments and work towards restoring stability.
The government further indicated that it is engaging closely with Malian authorities and will provide updates to guide the safe resumption of normal activities when the situation improves.
