The Second Deputy Minority Whip in Parliament and Member of Parliament (MP) for Weija Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has advised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to exercise its current political power judiciously, stressing that power is transient.
Speaking during the “Yensuro Ahunahuna” demonstration organised by the Bono Regional branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Sunyani, he emphasised that the harassment of NPP members and the use of state security to intimidate them will eventually come to an end.
He expressed concern that NDC leadership is wielding power arrogantly, weaponizing state institutions against the minority and carrying out indiscriminate arrests of NPP members.
He urged the NDC to desist from such actions, warning that the political power they currently hold will eventually transition to the NPP.
“With this arrogance of power we are not even sure how they are going to survive, you go and stand in front of tradition leaders and you will be throwing your left hand and this is the kind of respect well just like the powerful king said, he said that power is transient and therefore they should use their power wisely.
"They should use it reasonably, they should stop abusing, they should stop going after us unnecessarily, they should stop arresting us without any due course, they should stop the weaponisation of state institutions because time changes,” he stated.
The Bono Regional Youth Organiser of the NPP, Mr Abdul Razack Oppong, also expressed his dissatisfaction and called on President John Mahama and the NDC to fulfil their campaign promises.
He reiterated that the NPP youth will not remain passive while the NDC makes the country ungovernable.
He stated that the NPP youth strongly oppose coups d’état; however, he warned that persistent arrests and intimidation of NPP members by the NDC government may drive them to emulate events witnessed in Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire, where youth were “liberated” from unwarranted hardships and assaults by their political leadership.
He added that the NPP youth would intensify their protests to secure their liberation.
