Madina MP Francis-Xavier Sosu Bags PhD, Unveils Vision for Africa’s Economic Integration

The Member of Parliament for Madina, Hon. Dr. Francis-Xavier Sosu (Esq), has added a new milestone to his academic and professional journey, receiving a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law from the University of Ghana (UG).

The two-term lawmaker, legal practitioner, and policy advocate completed years of rigorous research to achieve the doctorate, marking the culmination of a distinguished academic record.

Dr. Sosu’s educational journey is closely tied to the University of Ghana, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, a Bachelor of Laws (LLB), and a Master of Laws (LLM) in Oil and Gas Law. He also holds an MPhil from the University of Education, Winneba, and successfully defended his PhD thesis in late 2025. In August 2025, he was appointed a Notary Public by the Supreme Court of Ghana, following nomination by Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie.

Research Focus on Africa’s Economic Future

Following the graduation ceremony, Dr. Sosu explained that his doctoral research explored international economic law, with a focus on regional integration in Africa. His study introduces the AFRICORN 63 Model, a new framework aimed at accelerating economic integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement.

“I’m hoping that this work will not end up as one of those studies that just sit on shelves, but one that can influence policy and help Africa integrate economically,” Dr. Sosu said.

He expressed gratitude to his supervisors and the University of Ghana for their guidance, singling out Professor Echia, Dr. Aziz Bamba, Dr. Appiah, Dr. Atupari, and Professor Atupari for their mentorship throughout the research process.

Inspiring the Youth: Education Has No Limits

Dr. Sosu also used the occasion to inspire young people to pursue education relentlessly and embrace lifelong learning.

“There is no limit to what we can do. The world is changing fast, and you cannot hold on to just one thing. Even as a sitting Member of Parliament, I must find time to study, research, and read to expand my scope,” he said.

He recounted his personal journey as an example of education’s transformative power:

“If I recount my story, coming from the streets and begging to eat, to standing here today, it shows how education can change a life. Irrespective of your background or who your parents are, you can change your story.”

Dr. Sosu encouraged the youth to remain resilient in the face of systemic challenges.

“If no one is helping you, help yourself. Rise and do something for yourself. Everyone can change their destiny using education as a tool.”
