NPP Suhum communicator labels Mahama-led gov't a failure over school feeding programme

By: Nana Ofori

Communication Team Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Suhum Constituency, Samuel Twumasi, has expressed deep concern over the School Feeding Programme, accusing the current government of failing to fulfil its promises.

Speaking on Adinkra FM’s morning show, Mr Twumasi said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, led by President John Dramani Mahama, did not deserve praise because it had failed to deliver on its commitments to Ghanaians.

He said promises made by the government regarding the Education Ministry influenced school heads to vote for the NDC.

The NPP communication team member explained that school heads believed the NDC government would release funds to enable them to purchase foodstuffs for the School Feeding Programme.

He said school heads had the right to protest against the government over its failure to fulfil that promise.

Mr Twumasi further stated that the government should not wait for citizens to protest before taking action to address their concerns, describing such an approach as a sign of failure.

He recalled that the previous NPP government allocated GH¢1.9 billion to the School Feeding Programme, with a surplus of GH¢200 million reportedly set aside to buffer stocks and ensure the provision of food despite price increases.

He therefore questioned what had happened to those funds and called on the government to explain how the money had been used.

“The government does not need to be praised since it resumed office; this government is a failed government to Ghanaians.

"Your promises made for the Education Ministry made the headmasters believe that if you give them the money to buy gari and others, at least they would work for profit.

“So they went all out to vote for you because they believed in your leadership and believed in the promises you made. So, if the headmaster does not gain these, the headmaster must protest.

“Any government that waits for the citizens to take action before it responds is a failed government,” he said.

Mr Twumasi added that Ghanaians deserved to know how the funds allocated to the programme had been used. He questioned whether any individual was exploiting the money for personal interest.

He called for the immediate release of the funds, while urging school heads not to hesitate to protest if the government failed to address the situation.
