Former NAFCO CEO Hanan Abdul-Wahab has petitioned the Attorney-General, alleging harassment, unlawful detention and rights violations by state agencies.

In the petition dated July 17, 2026, Abdul-Wahab alleged that the Attorney-General’s Office, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) have denied him due process since criminal proceedings against him began. He maintained his innocence and said he remains ready to face any fair judicial process.

The petition follows an earlier letter from his lawyers dated July 9, 2026, which raised concerns over alleged human rights violations and the seizure of his funds by EOCO. Abdul-Wahab said the concerns had not received a response.

According to the petition, he was first arrested on June 25, 2025, and spent more than two weeks in custody under a GH¢60 million bail condition, which he described as excessive. He further alleged that comments made publicly by the Attorney-General before charges were filed affected his presumption of innocence.

Abdul-Wahab was later arraigned before the High Court Criminal Court 4, presided over by Justice Kocuvie-Tay, where he pleaded not guilty and was granted bail of GH¢100 million with six sureties.

The former NAFCO boss stated that all charges against him were withdrawn on May 5, 2026, after his legal team challenged alleged procedural irregularities. He claimed that shortly after the withdrawal of charges, EOCO officers accompanied by armed, masked security personnel rearrested him at the court premises.

He alleged that his lawyers were prevented from accessing him and that he was taken to a hospital without his family or legal representatives being informed, despite them waiting nearby. According to him, he was released later that evening without interrogation.

Abdul-Wahab said he was re-arraigned before a specialised court about 11 days later, presided over by Justice Francis A. Achibonga. He added that the High Court subsequently allowed him to travel to the United Kingdom for medical attention, directing him to return by July 12.

However, he alleged that armed BNI operatives apprehended him on July 4 while he was preparing to board his flight after completing immigration procedures. He claimed he was held for four days without charge and that statements made online by Deputy Attorney-General Dr Justice Srem-Sai regarding an alleged attempt to access frozen funds were unproven.

Describing his experience as a “catch and release” pattern, Abdul-Wahab said he had been arrested and released four times. He has appealed to the Attorney-General to end what he considers harassment and to return his passport, phones and other personal belongings seized by state authorities.
