Vice President visits Avenor collapse scene as one dead, two still trapped under debris

The Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has visited the scene of a building collapse at Avenor in North Kaneshie in the Greater Accra Region, where one person has been confirmed dead and two others remain trapped beneath debris as emergency teams intensify rescue efforts.

The incident occurred on Sunday, June 7, when a three-storey building under construction near the Melcom Plus outlet and opposite the Ashfoam showroom suddenly collapsed, prompting a major emergency response from rescue agencies.

At the time of the Vice President’s visit, personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), supported by other security agencies, were still working with heavy equipment to locate and retrieve victims believed to be trapped under the rubble.

Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey earlier confirmed the fatality, while indicating that rescue operations were ongoing to save any remaining survivors still trapped in the debris.

Speaking at the scene, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang called for stricter enforcement and compliance with building regulations, stressing that many such tragedies are preventable if established safety rules are followed.

“Let us abide by the rules,” she urged, adding that failure to enforce construction and safety standards often results in avoidable loss of life.

She emphasized that while regulations may not always be popular, they are essential for safeguarding lives and ensuring orderly development, noting that accountability must be taken seriously across all sectors involved.

The Vice President also called for thorough investigations into the collapse and urged full cooperation from all stakeholders to ensure that the cause of the incident is properly established and addressed.

Emergency responders continue to carefully clear debris at the site, focusing on sections where survivors are suspected to be trapped. Authorities say every effort is being made to reach victims as quickly and safely as possible.

The Ghana National Fire Service has deployed heavy-duty equipment to support the operation, while security personnel continue to cordon off the area and restrict public access.
