The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has ordered the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) Board to suspend the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer for two weeks, effective immediately.
The directive, signed by the Minister, on Friday, June 5, 2026, to the Board chairman, cites Section 36(1) of the Ghana Health Service and Teaching Hospitals Act, 1996 (Act 526). The CEO is expected to report back to the Minister after the suspension.
The action follows the CEO’s announcement on June 3, 2026, that KATH would suspend emergency admissions, a move the Minister says contradicted explicit directives from the President.
During a meeting on June 4, 2026, attended by the Minister’s Chief Director, Technical Advisor, and Legal Advisor, the CEO reportedly admitted the announcement breached presidential instructions.
The Minister also pointed to an interview given to Channel One Newsroom by KATH’s Head of Public Affairs about the suspension.
He has asked the Board to investigate whether the Head of Public Affairs had authority to speak to the media and whether the interview was a sanctioned management decision, warning that appropriate sanctions should follow if needed.
The Board has been instructed to carry out a thorough investigation and submit a report to the Minister within two weeks.
Copies of the letter were sent to the Deputy Minister of Health, the Chief Director, the Technical Advisor, and KATH’s Chief Executive Officer.
