President Mahama begins state visit to Belarus to deepen ties, explore cooperation

President John Dramani Mahama has begun a state visit to the Republic of Belarus today, Friday, June 5, 2026, at the invitation of His Excellency Aleksandr Grigorievich Lukashenko, President of the Republic of Belarus.

According to a statement issued by the Minister of Communication and Spokesperson to the President, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, the visit seeks to strengthen diplomatic relations and explore new avenues for economic, agricultural, and technical cooperation between the two countries.

Upon arrival in Minsk, President Mahama will lay a wreath at the Victory Monument in honour of Soviet Army soldiers and Belarusian partisans who showed immense bravery during World War II.

A central feature of the trip is a high-level meeting between the two heads of state. President Mahama and President Lukashenko will hold private bilateral talks followed by expanded diplomatic sessions with ministers and senior officials from both countries.

Discussions will focus on strategic partnerships in agriculture, education, and commerce.

In support of President Mahama’s industrialisation and food-security agenda, he will travel to Brest to tour one of the region’s largest processors of milk, cheese, and baby products.

The visit is intended to facilitate knowledge sharing and explore potential partnerships in agro-processing. While in Brest, the President will also visit the Brest Hero Fortress Memorial Complex to pay respects at the site of the 1941 Soviet defence against Nazi forces.

The itinerary also includes a visit to Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Europe’s last remaining primeval forests, underscoring both countries’ commitment to environmental conservation.

The state visit will include the signing of at least four landmark bilateral agreements designed to foster mutual growth and institutional collaboration between Ghana and Belarus.

President Mahama is expected to depart Belarus and return to Accra on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.
