MoH tightens Ebola controls at Aflao border

The Ministry of Health (MoH) has moved to strengthen Ghana’s preparedness against Ebola by ordering tighter surveillance and response measures at the Aflao border.

During a field assessment, the Deputy Minister for Health, Prof. Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, engaged frontline agencies and inspected screening points, the isolation centre, and the municipal hospital to gauge real-time readiness and identify gaps in disease detection and control.

Prof. Ayensu-Danquah directed immediate steps to fast-track interventions and close critical gaps. She said the government will roll out modern, fully equipped border health facilities and increase investment in personnel, logistics, and essential supplies to reinforce Ghana’s frontline defence against potential Ebola outbreaks.

She reiterated that the measures aim to strengthen coordination among border agencies, improve early detection and isolation of suspected cases, and ensure rapid response capacity should an incident arise.

"The government is going to rollout modern and fully equipped border health facilities and increase investment personnel, logistics and essential supplies, this will reinforce frontline defence against potential Ebola outbreaks.

"This will strengthen coordination with border agencies and isolate suspected cases, and ensure response capacity if such incident arise," she stated.

The Deputy Minister emphasized the importance of sustained funding and operational support to keep screening, surveillance, and isolation systems functioning effectively.

Health officials at Aflao confirmed ongoing screening, surveillance, and isolation protocols but flagged several challenges that need urgent attention, including inadequate personal protective equipment (PPE), limited staffing, and deteriorating COVID-19–era infrastructure.

The officials welcomed the planned upgrades but urged quick action on PPE deliveries, staffing reinforcements, and repairs to existing infrastructure to avoid vulnerabilities that could undermine response efforts.

The Ministry said it will continue to monitor progress and work with local and international partners to ensure Aflao and other high-risk border points are equipped to protect public health.
