KATH suspends new emergency admissions after patient surge

The management of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has announced a temporarily halt in new admissions at its Accident and Emergency (A&E) Centre for 24 hours following a surge in patient numbers that has exceeded capacity.

In a statement issued by the Public Affairs Unit of KATH on Tuesday, June 2, said the 37‑bed A&E facility is currently caring for 61 admitted patients in its critical care areas, with a further 34 patients awaiting beds. As a result, the unit will not accept additional emergency cases for the time being.

Hospital management said the short suspension aims to ease pressure on staff and safeguard the quality of care for those already admitted.

“The decision was taken to prevent further strain on staff and to ensure that critically ill patients already at the centre receive adequate care,” it stated.

KATH urged members of the public to seek emergency services at other hospitals across the Ashanti Region while it stabilizes the situation.

The hospital is also coordinating with the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate to divert cases and relieve the A&E centre’s burden.

Emergency physicians and medical teams continue to manage the increased caseload, and admissions will resume once capacity permits.

KATH said it is closely monitoring the situation and will conduct periodic reviews.
