Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a leading flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has concluded a nationwide tour of all 276 constituencies ahead of the party’s presidential primaries scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.
The tour follows the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections, which brought an end to the party’s eight-year tenure in government. In response to the loss, the party’s National Council approved an early reorganisation roadmap, beginning with the election of a new flagbearer to lead preparations for the 2028 general elections.
Dr. Bawumia officially launched his campaign, dubbed “Our Journey Together,” on October 15, 2025, in Sene East in the Bono East Region. The nationwide exercise took him to every part of the country, with short breaks to accommodate official and public engagements.
According to his campaign team, the primary goal of the tour was to reconnect with party members at the grassroots level, gather feedback, and discuss strategies to rebuild and reposition the NPP following the 2024 electoral setback.
During interactions with party supporters, Dr. Bawumia reflected on the party’s electoral performance, noting a decline of more than two million votes compared to the 2024 elections. He attributed the outcome largely to economic challenges and voter dissatisfaction, while cautioning members against internal divisions.
A key focus of the campaign was the welfare and recognition of grassroots members. Dr. Bawumia met with constituency executives, polling station officers, electoral area coordinators, and party activists, proposing stronger engagement, regular interactions with national leadership, and improved recognition of party workers at the local level.
He concluded the tour in the Ashanti Region, thanking party members for their support and urging delegates to conduct themselves peacefully during the primaries. Dr. Bawumia pledged to work toward unifying the party after the internal contest and refocusing efforts on winning the 2028 general elections.
