Police arrest 100 suspects in Assin Wurakese following armed attack on health centre patient

An intelligence-led operation by the Central North Regional Police Command has resulted in the arrest of 100 residents of Assin Wurakese in connection with a recent armed attack on a patient at the Akoti Health Centre.

During a media briefing, the Central North Regional Police Commander, DCOP Abraham Acquaye, stated that the arrests followed sustained intelligence gathering, which indicated that the attack was a coordinated mob action involving several individuals within the community.

Acting on this intelligence, the police deployed approximately 85 personnel to Assin Wurakese to conduct a swoop aimed at identifying and isolating those directly and indirectly involved in the incident.

DCOP Acquaye explained that the 100 suspects would undergo a thorough screening process, after which those found culpable would be arraigned before court to face the full rigours of the law, while others would be released.

"We made our minds not to relax; we needed to investigate the bottom of the issue because we know the mob is more than the three we've arrested.

"So most of them ran away, and we intentionally relaxed the system. In the dawn hours between 1 and 5, we organised our police men, about 85, led by seven senior police officers, and they were able to arrest around 100 members of the community.

"We're now coming to do our screening, and from our investigation, those found to be part will be sent to court," he stated.

He noted that the decision to arrest a large number of residents was informed by evidence suggesting that some individuals had failed to prevent the crime, while others had aided and abetted the attackers. Additionally, certain persons had harboured suspects without reporting them to the police.

The Regional Commander further explained that the swoop followed earlier arrests made in connection with the case.

According to him, a community police officer and one Yaw Buabeng, who was previously a victim of a mob attack and is also a suspect in a related matter, had been arrested, arraigned before court, and subsequently remanded into police custody.

The two are expected to reappear before the court on 5 February 2026. He further confirmed the arrest of Daniel Ababio, who was captured in a viral video allegedly inflicting injuries with a pair of scissors on Yaw Buabeng at the Akoti Health Centre.

DCOP Acquaye cautioned the public against filming incidents where people are being attacked or killed instead of intervening or alerting the police, stressing that such conduct is unlawful.

He assured the public that the Police Command would not bow to pressure from politicians, traditional authorities, or any influential persons, emphasising that the law would be applied without fear or favour.
