Abiriw residents embark on clean-up exercise to promote sanitation and tourism

Residents of Abiriw in the Okere District on Saturday, May 9, embarked on a community-wide clean-up exercise aimed at improving sanitation and preserving the town’s waterfall enclave to boost tourism and local development.

The exercise, which commenced at 7:00 a.m., was led by Assembly Member Richard Ofori Addo in collaboration with traditional leaders, youth groups, and community volunteers.

Participants cleared plastic waste, debris, and other refuse around the Abiriw waterfall area and adjoining surroundings as part of efforts to restore the natural beauty of the tourist site and maintain a healthy environment for residents and visitors.

Among the dignitaries who participated in the exercise were the Abiriw Abontendomhene, Nana Offie Bampo, and the Abiriw Ahohohemaa, Nene Asiedua.

Addressing residents after the exercise, Hon. Richard Ofori Addo underscored the importance of environmental cleanliness and urged community members to avoid indiscriminate waste disposal.

“Cleanliness is not the responsibility of a few people alone; it is a collective duty for every resident of Abiriw. If we keep our surroundings clean and protect our environment, we will create a healthier community for ourselves and future generations,” he said.

He further called for sustained community participation in sanitation efforts to help preserve the town’s image and attract investment.

According to the Assembly Member, maintaining clean tourist sites would contribute significantly to economic growth, job creation, and the promotion of tourism in the area.

“Tourists and investors are naturally attracted to clean and peaceful communities. By preserving our environment and keeping our tourist sites clean, we are opening doors for development, job creation, and economic growth in Abiriw,” he added.

The exercise forms part of ongoing efforts by local authorities and residents to promote environmental sanitation and position Abiriw as an attractive destination for tourism and investment in the Eastern Region.
