The Member of Parliament (MP) for Abuakwa South, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, has reportedly been arrested by Ghana’s Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) over alleged corruption connected to his time as Registrar of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat.
While no official details have yet been released, the arrest was confirmed on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, in a Facebook post by Dzifa Gunu, Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Digital Centres Limited.
"Dr Kingsley Agyemang, former Scholarship Secretariat boss is in the grips of the BNI.
"His arrest comes on the heels of ongoing investigations into his stewardship as head of the GSC when scholarships were awarded in a very opaque manner," he stated in his Facebook page.
According to report Dr Agyemang served as Registrar of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat from February 2017 and has previously been linked to allegations relating to scholarship award management.
Investigations by The Fourth Estate raised concerns about alleged corruption and political influence in scholarship approvals for financially needy but academically outstanding students.
The report claimed some recipients had ties to politically connected individuals, including relatives of senior government officials and public figures.
It further alleged that multiple scholarships were awarded to some individuals sometimes across different academic programmes within the same year and that, between 2019 and 2020, certain awards may have been influenced by political patronage.
The report also cited alleged cases involving scholarship benefits for political figures and their associates, as well as claims of bribery, including allegations that applicants paid amounts up to £5,000 for scholarships reportedly worth about £40,000.
It further claimed that some beneficiaries were later required to pay for consent letters to secure overseas employment opportunities after completing their studies.
Authorities are yet to issued an official statement regarding the arrest or the investigations.
