The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has warned all "Big Push” contractors to ensure their projects are completed within the stipulated completion periods.
He noted that any further delays would result in contracts being terminated and reassigned to other contractors who can meet the deadlines.
Speaking to the media, he stressed that contractors are aware that there are generally no penalties for failing to complete road projects on time, but that “Big Push” projects are different.
“When contractors take jobs they know that there is no penalties for not completing on time so they complete when they complete but on this ‘Big Push’ it is not like that, you have to complete on time.
“Many of you who are established take it for granted and it is not right,” he stated.
The minister further said contractors must have adequate plants, equipment, materials and machines on site.
He explained that if the government is not seeing these, it means the contractor is not ready and cannot complete within the deadline; the contract will then be taken from such a contractor and given to someone more committed to delivering the work on time.
He emphasised that the government is prepared to provide the necessary materials required for the projects such as gravel, sand and all other materials, stating that these are ready and available.
He said the government had made promises to the public to complete the "Big Push” projects within a specific timeframe, adding that the people are eager for improved transport conditions to support their endeavours.
“We need to see enough plants, equipment and other materials ready to be used if not then we should introduce somebody who is more aggressive or hungry to be working gravel is available, the materials are also available,” he said.
