President Donald Trump was safely evacuated after gunfire erupted during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night, triggering panic among attendees and a swift response from security.
Video footage from the event shows the moment the president was hurriedly escorted off the stage by members of the U.S. Secret Service after shots were fired inside the Washington Hilton, where the annual dinner was being held.
Speaking at a news conference shortly after the incident, President Trump confirmed that a suspect had been “taken down” by security operatives. He assured the public that he and members of his Cabinet were unharmed.
According to preliminary information, the suspect, described by the president as being “armed with multiple weapons,” attempted to breach a security checkpoint before opening fire. Law enforcement officials say the individual, a 31 year old man from California, is now in custody and is expected to face charges soon.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche indicated that formal charges would be announced in due course.
Eyewitness accounts paint a tense scene. Wolf Blitzer, who was present outside the main ballroom, reported seeing the gunman firing at close range, prompting dozens of attendees to take cover as security personnel moved in.
Sources also confirm that a U.S. Secret Service agent was struck during the incident. The agent, who was wearing protective gear at the time, has been hospitalized. Their condition has not yet been disclosed.
Authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the attack, while security measures around key government locations in Washington, D.C., have been heightened.
