The Minister for Transport, Joseph Nikpe Bukari, is set to meet leaders of the Ghana Union of Traders Association on Thursday, April 16, to address concerns over the rollout of the Publican AI system used in clearing goods at Ghana’s ports.
The meeting follows rising tensions in the trade sector after GUTA directed freight forwarders and clearing agents to stage a sit-down strike on Monday, April 13, in protest against the system.
Operators say the implementation of the Publican AI platform lacks sufficient consultation and clarity, raising fears about its impact on port operations.
Speaking after a meeting with the Ghana Shippers Authority, GUTA Vice President Joseph Paddy revealed that the association had called for a temporary suspension of the system pending further engagement.
“We also told the chief executive officer that the programme should be suspended… He will be meeting us on Thursday in the morning as soon as possible to solve all the challenges,” he said.
While the Publican AI system aims to enhance efficiency and transparency in port clearance, resistance from industry players persists, with calls for broader stakeholder engagement before full implementation.
