Mahama Appoints Baba Sadiq as Ghana’s Envoy to Nigeria

President John Mahama has appointed Baba Sadiq Abdulai Abu as High Commissioner-Designate to Nigeria.

The appointment was officially announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on March 1, 2026, tasking Abu with representing Ghana’s interests in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation.

The decision highlights the strategic importance Ghana attaches to its bilateral relations with Nigeria, a key economic and political partner within the West African sub-region.

As High Commissioner-Designate, Baba Sadiq Abdulai Abu is expected to strengthen cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the areas of trade, diplomacy, and cultural exchange.

The appointment, however, remains subject to formal acceptance and the completion of diplomatic protocols by the Nigerian government.

The new nomination comes weeks after President Mahama ordered the recall of the former High Commissioner, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, following allegations of voter inducement.

Baba Jamal was recalled on February 7, 2026, after taking part in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries in the Ayawaso East Constituency, which he won.
