President John Dramani Mahama has directed the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) to investigate allegations that government scholarships meant for studies abroad are being sold for cash.
The directive follows claims made by a former Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Mr. Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, during a radio discussion on Sompa 106.5 FM.
According to a letter cited by The Observer Times on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, the President’s attention was drawn to comments made by Mr. Nkansah, who alleged that an individual paid money to secure a scholarship to pursue studies overseas.
“The attention of the President has been drawn to a radio discussion aired on Sompa 106.5 FM, during which a panelist, Mr. Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, former Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme, alleged that an individual paid to secure a scholarship to pursue studies abroad,” the letter stated.
In a video of the discussion that has since gained wide public circulation, Mr. Nkansah further alleged that some government officials were selling scholarships for as much as GH¢100,000.
The letter noted that the discussion, conducted in the Twi language, had generated significant public interest, prompting concern at the highest level of government.
“Following a review of the said radio discussion, which was conducted in the Twi language and has since gained wide public circulation, the President considers the allegation to be serious and of grave public concern, particularly in light of the Government’s firm commitment to transparency, integrity, and equal access to educational opportunities,” the letter said.
As a result, President Mahama has tasked the NIB to immediately investigate the allegations, establish their factual basis, identify any persons involved, and determine the veracity or otherwise of the claims.
“The Bureau is further directed to submit its findings for the President’s consideration and for any appropriate action that may arise therefrom,” the letter added.
The outcome of the investigation is expected to determine whether any officials will face sanctions or prosecution, as the government seeks to reinforce public confidence in the administration of scholarship schemes.
